Custom Printed Apparel: FAQ
Silk screen vs Direct-to-Garment vs Direct-to-Film
While each method involves application of ink to a garment, there are some distinctive differences that may impact your choices.
Screen Printing
Screen printing is the process of transferring a stenciled design onto a flat surface using a mesh screen, ink and a squeegee. The basic method involves creating a stencil on a fine mesh screen, and then pushing ink (or paint) through to create an imprint of your design on the surface beneath.
Advantages:
- Thick, bold, vibrant prints
- High Longevity of Print
- Cost-effective for large runs
Disadvantages:
- Incurs setup and color-change fees
- Designs must be solid color*
- 10-12 business day turnaround
Direct to Garment
DTG or direct to garment is a process of printing graphics onto textiles and garments. It uses modified inkjet technology to print whatever graphic you want onto the shirt, including gradients and blended colors. In fact, our DTG printers can print over 16 mil colors directly to your garment.
Advantages:
- Full Color Prints & Gradients
- Dynamic, vibrant prints
- Rapid turnaround, no set up fees
Disadvantages:
- Some limits to materials
- May fade slightly over time
- Slightly more expensive (large runs)
Direct to Film
DTF or direct to flm is another method of applying graphics to garments, though the application process is drastically different. With DTF, the graphic is instead printed onto a "transfer film," then coated with an adhesion powder which allows the ink to create excellent adhesion to nearly any substrate!
Advantages:
- Full Color Prints
- Bold, vibrant prints
- Stretchable, washable, fade resistant
- Easy to store and print on demand
Disadvantages
- Slightly longer lead times
- Potentially more expensive (lg runs)
Average Raw Apparel Costs
Generic base costs for raw, unprinted apparel (for reference, costs vary depending on available sales and final selection)
Standard Tee
A unisex, 6-oz 100% cotton tee in black/white/navy/charcoal (e.g. PC61)
Standard Hoodie
A unisex, 9.7-oz 100% cotton face hoodie in black/white/navy/charcoal (e.g. PC78H)
Ladies V-Neck Tee
A ladies v-neck, 5.4-oz 100% cotton tee in black/white/navy/charcoal (e.g. LPC54V)

Cost for Pretreatment, Printing, & Curing Only. Garment Not Included.
Standard DTG Print
- Full Color Print (up to 12"x18")
- Large Prints (16"x20") + $3
- Small Prints (10"X13") - $2
- Hat Prints (5.5"x3") $14/ea
- Sleeve Prints (3.75"x17.5") + $3 ea
Foil Prints
- Standard Size (12"x18")
- Foil Finish in a variety of colors including Gold, Silver, Red, etc.
- Specialty Foils available including Crushed Foil, Holographic, etc.
Custom Design
- Charged by .5 hr increments
- Most Designs completed in 2 hrs
- Original Artwork, in-house designers
- Finished artwork available in JPG/PNG formats, no additional cost.
Average DTF Printing Costs
Cost for Transfer, Application, and Curing only. Garment Not Included.
Standard DTF Print
- Full Color Print (up to 12"x22")
- Variable sizing, any length/width x 22"
- Printed as a "Gang Run" and manually weeded (cut out) by hand
Specialty Prints
- Standard Size (12"x2")
- Metallic Glitter Finish in a variety of colors including Gold, Silver, Red, etc.
- Neon & UV-reactive prints also available
Custom Design
- Charged by .5 hr increments
- Most Designs completed in 2 hrs
- Original Artwork, in-house designers
- Finished artwork available in JPG/PNG formats, no additional cost.
